CAN I DIY THIS or HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
4 FACTORS TO CONSIDER
If you know me personally, then you will know that I am an avid DIYer. Amongst my biggest DIY accomplishments including fixing our broken pool cleaning robot and setting up drip irrigation systems in our garden. It brings me a great sense of accomplishment whenever I embark on a new challenge and navigate through the researching, troubleshooting and see the fruits of my labor. But I also know my limits on certain home projects and leave it to the professionals. So, let’s explore some of the factors below worth considering to help you make the right choice in the realm of interior design.
ARE YOU A DIYer?
CREATIVITY
You have a strong sense of design and you’ve been collecting lots of Pinterest images. You know exactly what you want your space to end up looking like and can see all the kit of parts coming together. Overseeing the whole design process excite you and you just can’t wait to put your personal touches throughout your home.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Do you enjoy learning new skills and gain experience pertaining to interior design and home improvement? Problem solving is the least glamourous, but unavoidable, part of the process. And you are not afraid of bumps on the road, because there will be some (or a lot if you didn’t engage the right tradesman).
BUDGET
Your budget is tight, therefore, the cost of hiring an interior design may not be feasible. This link brings you to a good article that will give you a sense of the designer fee to expect. However, feel free to reach out to schedule a Discovery Call and a complimentary virtual session where I am very transparent about the fee that I charge.
TIME COMMITMENT
It is a process and depends on the size of your project, it can take a few weeks or several months. Ask yourself whether you are prepared to spend the necessary time to do research, purchasing, coordination and problem solving. For new construction, I’ve had worked on projects that took a couple of years from the inception to complete furnishing and move-in. If the scope of work is too large, such as a new home construction or furnishing an entire home, it may be best to leave it to a design professional.
HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
TIME SAVING
You are very busy with your career/business and/or family life. You simply do not have the time or interest to wrap in the world of design details. Not only will your designer handle all the design development, he/she will guide you through the decision making process with efficiency. Design decisions need to be made in a timely manner to prevent delay in construction and furnishing deliveries.
STRESS FREE
DESIGN VISION
Whether you have a strong sense of design or just have an inkling of what design style you are leaning towards, an interior designer will help to develop a strong design concept that will guide all the decision making. The result will be a tailor solution that suits your specific needs, lifestyle and design preferences. Trust your designer to bring the WOW factor to your dream home!
VALUE ADDED
This is a significant investment that you are making and an interior designer will guide you to make value added decisions and avoid costly mistakes. No more buying a piece of furniture that you’ll later regret. Also, designers have access to networks of suppliers and vendors that may not be available to homeowner. Good tradesman and sources are hard to find and an interior designer is your gateway into these resources that he/she will use to create a space that looks collected and unique (instead of a look that seems pulled off a big box retailer catalog).
